History and Mission Statement

from Deirdre, July 2011

History:

Founded in 1989, Maple Community Garden is one of the oldest community gardens in Vancouver, British Columbia.  It is located along the Arbutus Greenway, on the north side of 6th Avenue, between Maple Street and Cypress Street, in the neighbourhood of Kitsilano. It has approximately 75 members, 7 member sections and 3 communal sections, as well as bee hives and a children’s garden. Members are required to attend a minimum of 4 work parties a year to help maintain the areas of the garden that are open for the use and enjoyment of the public. There are approximately 12 work parties a year and 2 general meetings, one in the Spring and one in the Fall.

Mission Statement:

Together we grow and thrive
Maple Community Garden is an organic garden working in partnership with nature. Our mission is to cultivate not just plants, but a sense of peace and repose. We believe in the power of green spaces incorporating natural materials like wood, stone, fresh air and all weathers to enrich our lives.

Together we make our community greener, healthier and more vibrant
We promote environmentally responsible gardening practices to sustain this space for future gardeners and visitors.

Respect the beauty and space
Our garden members and volunteers work hard to enhance the neighbourhood and to grow organic food and flowers for our families. Respect the beauty and space provided here for all to enjoy…including the birds and the beneficial insects that visit our garden.
